The previous attempt put the tap target in a sibling view behind the controls, but React Native's responder system only walks up the React tree, so the opaque scrim in front swallowed the touch instead of letting it through. Put the handler on the outer container, which is an ancestor of both the scrim and the buttons and never fades, so taps reach it whether the controls are showing or not.
